The Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes is Three Times Higher

Diabetes occurs when your blood sugar, also called blood glucose, is too high. High blood sugar can cause health problems over time. The main types of diabetes are type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for medication to be prescribed. People with prediabetes are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and many of the health complications associated with it. If not treated, it often leads to type 2 diabetes within five years.

Incidence of diabetes increases with age
Over 30% of North American adults have prediabetes or diabetes. Research shows the risk of diabetes increases with age. A 2004 epidemiological study found the incidence of type 2 diabetes was lowest among people between the ages of 18 – 44 at a 3% incidence rate. However at age 45, there was a threefold increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes. Those in the 45 - 65 age group had a 10% incidence rate and those between the ages of 65 - 79 had roughly 12% affected by type 2 diabetes.
